Dr. Chu was born in St. Louis (Feb. 28, 1948) and grew up in Garden City, N.Y. He earned a B.A. in mathematics and a B.S. in physics from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D in physics from the Univerisity of California, Berkeley. His hobbies include bicycling, swimming and cooking and he is married to Jean Chu, a physicist trained at Oxford University. __
