MAKKAH — More than 200 citizens have enrolled in an anti-illiteracy campaign in Al-Lith, Al-Watan reported. Director of Al-Lith Education Department Miri Barakati said the directorate launched the campaign last month to encourage citizens aged 40 to 90 to join the campaign and participate in classes that teaches Arabic writing and reading. He said: “The campaign will continue for another month. “The students were taught by 13 teachers from the directorate. They were extremely happy and proud of themselves because their knowledge, regardless of how meager it is, will elevate their lives and their family's lives.” Barakati also said learning to write and read has enabled them to study literature, religion and various sciences. The department's Adult Education Director Maddah Al-Thaalabi said the campaign includes a number of courses and educational programs. “We do focus on reading the Holy Qur'an but we also have recreational, social, cultural and health programs. “We also teach them how to solve basic mathematical problems. “The participants of the programs receive a certificate of completion and attendance. “They can present these certificates at the anti-illiteracy centers to continue their courses.” The official added the campaign covered 11 different villages in the area.
