Ducks to face Blackhawks in West finals
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 12 - 05 - 2015

ANAHEIM, California — Corey Perry scored from a goalmouth scramble 2:26 into overtime as the Anaheim Ducks advanced to the Western Conference finals with a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames Sunday in Game 5 of their second-round series.
Matt Beleskey got the tying power-play goal early in the third period for the Ducks, who will face the Chicago Blackhawks for a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Pacific Division champion Ducks are in their first conference finals since 2007, the year of their only NHL championship.
Perry limped off the ice in the second period with an apparent leg injury, but returned moments later. He wrapped up the night with his NHL-leading 15th point of the postseason, cashing in a rebound for his seventh goal.
Frederik Andersen made 17 saves and Ryan Kesler scored a power-play goal in the second period for the Ducks, who have won eight of their nine playoff games this spring.
Jiri Hudler and Johnny Gaudreau scored early goals for the Flames in the final game of their first playoff trip since 2009.
In Sunday's other playoff, Chris Kreider scored in the first minute and final second of the opening period, and Rick Nash and Dan Boyle added goals in the third as the New York Rangers held on to edge the Washington Capitals 4-3 and force a Game 7 in the second-round playoff series.
New York led 2-0, then 4-1 with less than 12-1/2 minutes left in regulation. But Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov and Joel Ward put the puck past Henrik Lundqvist less than 3 minutes apart to make it a one-goal game with nearly half a period to go.
But Lundqvist was solid the rest of the way, stopping Washington's last four shots — including Alex Ovechkin on a 1-on-1 — to finish with 42 saves.
Game 7 is Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
US, Czechs, Russia in quarters
Brock Nelson scored twice and added an assist Sunday as the United States clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the Ice Hockey World Championship with a 3-1 victory over Slovenia.
The Czech Republic and defending champion Russia also advanced to the knockout stage, while already-qualified Canada maintained a perfect record by trashing Switzerland 7-2 to clinch first place in its group.
The Czechs beat Germany 4-2 while Russia needed overtime to overcome Slovakia 3-2.
Nelson has six goals at the tournament and tops the scoring chart together with Sweden's Filip Forsberg.
The United States is atop Group B with 15 points from six games, one ahead of Russia while Finland is in third with 12. Slovenia has zero and will be demoted to the second-tier tournament next year.
Canada tops Group A with 18 points, five more than Sweden and the Czech Republic with one game to go in the group stage.
Switzerland has nine in fourth. — Agencies
