How long will we tolerate abusive teachers in Saudi schools?

Ahmad Abdulaziz Al-Rakban
Al-Riyadh

It seems that some male and female teachers want to use the same methods that were used in the past to discipline children in school. I wish that some of those violent teachers would see their own children beaten before their eyes by other teachers so that they would feel the same pain parents feel when their children are hit by an abusive teacher. Frankly speaking, I do not wish any harm to any child no matter what his father has done to others. I hope Allah Almighty protects all children everywhere.

I would like to tell the Minister of Education that some of our schools need specialized psychology clinics to treat the abusive behavior of male and female teachers who are infamous for using violence and obscene words as a means of disciplining students. Those teachers can usually be found in schools that are run by weak principals who do not monitor the actions and behavior of teachers, let alone hold them accountable for their wrongdoings. What would the situation be without cell phones in some schools where teachers use whips to lash students? If we did not have cell phones, the situation would be worse and more widespread.

Dear minister, male and female teachers and administrative employees in public and private schools are in dire need of a new system. They should swear that they will never be negligent in their duties or beat students or use abusive words with them, and that they will be mindful of Allah in their actions. Those who do not take the oath should resign and leave this profession.

If a teacher kicks a student, he should be dismissed from his job and demoted to an administrative position where he cannot interact with students. This is how we can honor teachers and bring respect to the profession. People have honor and teachers are entrusted with students. Not only should abusive teachers be punished, but also principals and supervisors because they have failed to perform their duties as well.

Dear minister, you are honored to be appointed in this important position that brings a lot of difficult responsibilities. Have mercy on mothers and female teachers. Your predecessor could not unite female teachers with their families. Some of these teachers live in one city and work in another city and have to travel a long distance and stay away for hours from their families and children. Some work in deserts while their families live in the city. Please have mercy on them and consider their circumstances. Some female teachers are killed in road accidents. Most of them are good teachers who use creative methods with children and are never violent as some of their counterparts are who live and work in the city near their families.

How can we raise a well-behaved generation when some teachers are bad? How can we trust such teachers with our children? Negligence among teachers in on the rise. Dear minister, you have a huge responsibility.
