With reference to the article "Avoiding water wastage: California shows the way" (Apr. 6), due to naturally harsh and desert environment not only the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but all Gulf countries are faced with an extreme shortage of water. Saudi Arabia alone currently produces around 1 billion cubic meters of desalinated seawater per year to meet the increasing water demand and to avoid a water crisis. Apart from the high cost in energy, desalination also affects the ocean and the environment. The seawater used in most desalination plants has high amount of harmful chemicals which must be removed so that they do not cause health and environmental problems. It is clear that extensive work is urgently needed to increase public awareness of the importance of water conservation. Media programs must highlight this issue so that this precious commodity is not misused or overused and can be preserved for future generations. Kalimullah Nasiruddin, By email
