JEDDAH – The escalating consumption of water owing to rapid industrial expansion and a growing population in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has placed emphasis on wastewater treatment, Frost & Sullivan said in a new study. The municipal sector, identified by governments as a priority area amid concerns on deteriorating ground water quality and damage to the marine ecosystem, will be a key revenue generation source for membrane elements. The preparations for the 2020 Football World Cup in Qatar will also lead to the deployment of several infrastructure as well as supporting water projects, further fuelling the adoption of membrane elements, it said. Declining costs will push membrane-based desalination to the forefront. In a study “Analysis of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Membrane Elements Market”, Frost & Sullivan found that the market earned revenues of $491.0 Million in 2014 and estimates this to reach $869.3 million in 2018. The opportunities for membrane bio-reactors will be substantial, considering the potential for recycling and reuse of grey water (domestic sewage) and industrial effluents. “With the demand for water in the GCC expected to double in the next two decades, governments are adopting a multi-faceted approach towards water management,” said Frost & Sullivan Energy and Environmental Industry Analyst. “This includes consistent investments in membrane-based desalination, focus on energy efficiency in desalination, reducing technical and commercial losses in water systems, wastewater reuse, and a possible relook into the water tariff structure.” Currently, the subsidized water tariff in the GCC countries hinders the adoption of membrane technologies. High non-revenue water and low levels of recycle and reuse also limit the use of membrane systems. To capture market share, vendors must widen their product range to include specialized products. “Offering one-stop solutions catering to various requirements will ensure consumer loyalty,” suggested the Analyst. “Further, establishing a smooth working relationship with water original equipment manufacturers will be crucial to quicken development in the GCC membrane elements market.” — SG
