After six weeks of slugging it out for the top plum, King Abdul Aziz Medical City (KAMC), International Medical Center (IMC), JIS (Jeddah International School) tennis clubs proved that they are the force to reckon with in the ongoing 1st Prince Tennis Tournament currently being held at the JIS tennis court facilities.
KAMC continued its unbeaten run with five wins in as many games by blanking DELTA (Erfan Hospital Tennis Team) 3-0 and assured itself of the top spot in the Ladies Mixed (C/B2/B1) Category. In the first set the KAMC pair of Maying Amor and Ella Ramos had a difficult time engaging Delta's Elly Dominguez and Dax Portillano who surged 4-3 before yielding the set 5-8. In the second set of B1 players, KAMC's Gina Woods and Malu Argarin easily disposed of Delta's Malou dela Merced and Delle Padilla with a 7-1 thrashing before finally sealing the set and the match 8-2. The third and final set was won by KAMC with Ria Alimon and Joan dela Chica beating Nieves Ubasa and Jean Gandia 8-2. With this win KAMC has earned first semifinal slot in the Mixed Category. IMC carried on its domination of the B2 category by trouncing Faisal team 3-0 in the second-round of the elimination, bringing its win/loss record to 4-0 and virtually assuring itself of the top spot and a finals slot. IMC started off with Mary Anne Amor and Mila Carmina against the duo of Julie Baquilar and Fenn dela Torre, who came close to level the score at 4-all. It was a see-saw battle. In the end, however, the indomitable pair of Maying and Miles prevailed to win the set 8-5. In the second set, IMC's Tracy Atienza, a C player paired with B2 veteran Lanie Mislang, started the game with tentative forehand strokes and appeared to be nervous in her only second appearance in B2 category. She was immediately broken in her first serve, which the Faisal's tandem of Nadia Abu Alsaud and Delle Padilla immediately took advantage of to take the first 3 games 3-0. Tracy held her next serve and with Lanie providing able support at the net and with her effective volley, they leveled the score 3-all. Nadia and Delle fought back to gain the upperhand at 5-3, but that was the last they could muster as the IMC pair found their rhythm to capture the second set and the match 8-5.
In Category C, Al-Baik team, playing under the banner of Pnoy Xpat Tennis Club, surprised Group II Leader KAMC, unbeaten in its 3 previous outings, to take the top spot with an identical 3-1 win/loss record with the win-over-the-other rule. Al-Baik's Karen Taft and Fatima easily trounced KAMC's Beverly Francisco and Babes Bautista, 8-1. Ria Alimon and Weng Valenzuela avenged the first set with an 8-2 beating of Donna and Libay to force a third and deciding set, which was won 8-4 by the tested tandem of Divine Mijares and Joy de Mesa.
In the other Group I, JIS-5 with Nathalie Bartolome as team captain thrashed Fayrouz tennis team 3-0, to remain the only unbeaten team in Category C JIS-Nats leads the group with a sweep of all its matches with a win/loss record of 4-0.
