After their reintroduction in the late 1990s the Oryx have been successfully breeding and growing. Similar reintroduction programs have been launched to bring the species back to its original numbers which were visible in the wild up to the 1970s in Wadi Rub Al-Khali (Empty Quarters). From 1993 to 2003 the Oryx population increased from 400 to 700. In Oman, fewer than four breeding adults remain after the protected areas were removed from UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
