The first inhabitants date back 4,500 years, some of whom came from Asia by the Bering Strait. Greenland has about 57,000 inhabitants, including 50,000 Inuits and some 7,000 Danes and others from the mainland. More than a quarter of the population lives in the capital Nuuk, on the western side of the island. The local languages spoken are Greenlandic and Danish. __
