Samar Fatany writes in her article “Diplomatic solutions must be found to regional conflicts” (Dec. 20): “The friction between the superpowers, the failure of the United Nations and the selfish agendas of egotistical politicians have mobilized an international movement that rejects the global status quo and makes people unwilling to stand by and allow genocide, massacres and injustices to continue.” Undoubtedly, the failure of the United Nations and the selfish agendas of some countries are the cause of regional conflicts and the destruction of peace and stability. Following the biased role and double standard of America - especially after 9/11 - peace and stability have been destroyed and the world is on the brink of destruction. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-frontal attack on the US at the 43rd Munich Conference on Security Policy, saying it had made the world a more dangerous place and had left successive conflicts unresolved. Renowned socialist and former member of Britain's Parliament Tony Benn in addressing a gathering on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 said that the so-called war on terror drone attacks on Pakistan and the attack on Libya by America and its allies had made the world more dangerous. The war on terror has caused an increase in terrorism, extremism and poverty. And Germany's greatest novelist and Nobel laureate, Gunter Grass said: “He (Bush) has always been a threat to world peace.” Indeed the US is a threat to world peace for it does not do justice. It frequently and unjustly uses its veto power against Muslim countries. NATO forces are also frequently used against Muslim countries, but were not used against Israel in 2008 when 1,360 innocent and unarmed Palestinians were killed nor were they used in last summer's 50-day attack on Gaza in which more than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed. The UN has lost its power and dignity. It is a puppet in the hands of America. It acts according to the will of America. It seems as though it is nothing before American power. Being a superpower, it is the responsibility of America to do justice and to maintain peace in the world. Without justice, peace can never be maintained. Dr. Noorul Hasan, India
