LONDON — Champion Manchester City galvanized its pursuit of Premier League leader Chelsea Sunday with an emphatic 3-0 victory over a Southampton side which has surprisingly come between the leading title protagonists. With table-topping Chelsea held to a 0-0 draw against Sunderland Saturday, victory for City at fortress St. Mary's took it above Southampton into second place with 27 points from 13 matches, six behind Jose Mourinho's pace setter. Tottenham Hotspur came from a goal down to beat Everton 2-1 with goals from Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado moving Spurs up to seventh with 20 points. After a less than convincing start to the attempted defense of their title, City's display against Southampton saw it back to its free-flowing best as goals from Yaya Toure, Frank Lampard and Gael Clichy condemned Ronald Koeman's high-flying side to a first home defeat of the season. The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Eliaquim Mangala was sent off for a second bookable offense with 15 minutes remaining. Chelsea failed to score for the first time this season although the league leader remained unbeaten. Having previously been held by Manchester rivals United and City, this was just the third time this season Chelsea had dropped points. Genoa jumps to third Genoa moved provisionally into third place in Serie A Sunday as it cruised to a 3-0 win at Cesena, while AC Milan earned a 2-0 victory at home to Udinese in a match which saw both teams reduced to 10 men. Genoa was up 2-0 after just eight minutes as Alessandro Matri scored one goal and set up the other. Cesena defender Massimo Volta turned into his own net shortly before halftime and both sides missed a penalty either side of the break. Calls for goal-line technology may return after Milan was not given a goal following Adil Rami's header, although replays appeared to show that the referee was right in ruling the ball had not fully crossed the line. Genoa moved ahead of Napoli and Sampdoria. Elsewhere, Mario Gomez broke his eight-month scoring drought to help Fiorentina beat Cagliari 4-0. Bottom club Parma is further in trouble after losing 2-1 at Palermo, while Empoli drew 0-0 against Atalanta. Sassuolo extended its unbeaten run to seven matches by coming from behind to beat Hellas Verona 2-1 Saturday, and Lazio was held 0-0 at Chievo Verona. PSG scores 9th win Zlatan Ibrahimovic's penalty was enough to give Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 win over Nice Saturday for its ninth straight win in all competitions, although coach Laurent Blanc lamented that his team's performance was “very average.” Ibrahimovic continued his return to form with his second goal in a week to help a scrappy PSG stay within one point of French league leader Marseille. Ibrahimovic, the league's top scorer for the past two seasons, has scored six so far. He had not scored in the league since a hat trick against Saint-Etienne on Aug. 31. Marseille beat Nantes 2-0 Friday night and has 34 points after 15 games. Elsewhere, Rennes blanked Monaco 2-0, Reims beat Corsican side Bastia 2-1, Lorient won 3-2 at Toulouse, Lens won 2-0 against Metz and Caen drew 1-1 with Montpellier. — Agencies
