Spurs 86, Clippers 83: At Los Angeles, Roger Mason's 3-pointer with 8.4 seconds remaining lifted the San Antonio Spurs to an 86-83 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers for their third straight victory. Mason, who led the Spurs with 21 points, got away from Ricky Davis near the top of the key and had no trouble nailing his third 3-pointer of the game after the Clippers had rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final 6-½ minutes. Garnett suspended, O'Neal fined Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett has been suspended for one game and Phoenix center Shaquille O'Neal has been fined $25,000 for separate incidents over the weekend. Garnett was penalized for hitting Milwaukee's Andrew Bogut in the face near the end of Saturday's game. Garnett will sit out Tuesday night when the Celtics host the New York Knicks. O'Neal was fined for verbally abusing an official and failing to leave the court quickly after being ejected Sunday night against Detroit. The NBA issued the penalties Monday. Legend Newell dies Pete Newell, the US Hall of Fame Basketball coach who guided the University of California to the 1959 NCAA National Championship, died Monday. He was 93. Newell passed away at the San Diego County home of Earl Shultz, one of the players from the 1959 national champion Golden Bears. Newell had a malignant tumor removed from his lung in 2005.
