It was the fourth successive win for Pittsburgh (7-2-1), who have outscored opponents 19-3 during the streak. The Sabres (2-9-1) are 0-7-1 in their last eight games and have scored 12 non-shootout goals in their 12 games this season while allowing 41. They have taken just 58 shots in their last four games, an average of 19.5 a game. Kunitz registered one of three goals for the Penguins' NHL-leading power play when he scored at 2:33 of the third period to put the Penguins ahead 4-0. The left winger also had an assist. Center Evgeni Malkin also scored with a man advantage at 13:11 of the third period to score and right winger Patric Hornqvist scored on the power play. Maple Leafs 3, Blackhawks 2: Peter Holland snapped a tie with a goal in the third period as Toronto defeated Chicago. Nazem Kadri and James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Maple Leafs. The Blackhawks had two power-play goals, one from Brad Richards and the other from Brent Seabrook, who also had an assist. Hurricanes 3, Coyotes 0: Elias Lindholm scored two first-period goals and Carolina went on to record their first victory of the season, defeating Arizona at PNC Arena. The outcome in front of 10,870 gave first-year coach Bill Peters his first victory as an NHL head coach. Goalie Cam Ward made 25 saves for his 22nd career shutout and his first since denying Toronto on March 27, 2012. Every other team in the league has at least two wins. Lightning 4, Capitals 3: Jason Garrison scored the game-winning goal at 2:27 of the third period to help Tampa Bay earn a win against Washington. Garrison's second goal of the season came after Steven Stamkos won a faceoff in the offensive zone and the defenseman sent a slap shot between several players and past Capitals goalie Braden Holtby.
The Lightning (8-3-1) have now won three successive games while the Capitals fell to 4-4-2.
