Resignation over gender segregation withdrawn

Municipal Council member Abdullah Al-Suwailim decided to withdraw his resignation from the council after a meeting he held with Prince Mansour Bin Mit'eb Bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Minister of Municipality and Rural Affairs.
The meeting was attended by Eng. Tariq Al-Qasabi, Deputy Chairman of the council.
Suwailim submitted his resignation in protest over what he claimed “violations of Islamic law” during the city's Eid Al-Fitr celebration last October.
A missing concrete barrier segregating men from women sparked the tension between the conservative member and the Riyadh Mayoralty. With only a 30- meter-wide open space separating the two genders, it was inviting the temptation to mix, it was claimed.
The member is expected to attend the coming council meeting on Nov. 16. – Okaz/SG __
