The first scientific forum for autism begins at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry Nov. 9. The theme of the four-day forum, under the patronage of Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Al- Saud is “Autism: Reality and Future,” and is to focus on the latest research connected with autism patients,” said Princess Fahdah Bint Saud Al-Saud, head of the Faisaliya Woman's Welfare Society. Minister of Social Affairs, Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen, will attend the forum organized to mark the establishment of the Jeddah Center for Autism, which was established 15 years ago as the first autism center in the Arab World. “We have extended all possible support to those suffering from autism and their families,” said Princess Fahdah. Workshops at the forum will discuss three main points: Educational and rehabilitation programs for autism, programs for helping autism patients in the Arab World and training families of autism patients. Such forums will help with the exchange of knowledge and experience between Arab countries by discussing problems and the best way to solve them, said Princess Fahdah. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a pattern of social and communication deficits. Although it occurs in all cultures and countries, most of the published research has come from Western industrialized countries. In particular, relatively little is known about its clinical correlates and co-morbidity in African and Middle Eastern countries, a recent study by king Fahd Medical Center in Riyadh said. – SG __
