Weekes wins in SO, beats Lightning 4-3
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 07 - 11 - 2008

After allowing a shootout goal to Vincent Lecavalier, New Jersey goalkeeper Kevin Weekes stopped Jussi Jokinen and Vaclav Prospal to give the Devils a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.
Patrik Elias and Jamie Langenbrunner scored in the shootout for New Jersey, which won for the second time in six games. The Devils also got goals from David Clarkson, Elias and Jay Pandolfo in regulation.
Jokinen scored twice for Tampa Bay and Martin St. Louis tied it late in the third period, but the Lightning's three-game winning streak ended.
The Devils learned Tuesday that regular goalkeeper Martin Brodeur will be sidelined at least until February with an elbow injury.
Blue Jackets 5, Oilers 4: At Columbus, Ohio, Manny Malhotra tipped in a rebound with 1:09 left, making a winner of prized goalie prospect Steve Mason in his NHL debut and leading Columbus over Edmonton.
Mason, making his fourth professional start and first in the NHL, had 22 saves. He got the start because top goalie Pascal Leclaire is out with an ankle injury and backup Fredrik Norrena hurt his groin during the morning skate Wednesday.
The Blue Jackets blew a 2-0 second-period lead, then recovered from a 4-2 deficit in the third.
Kristian Huselius, Derek Brassard, R.J. Umberger and Fredrik Modin also scored for Columbus. Mike Commodore, Jake Voracek, Rick Nash and Raffi Torres each had two assists.
Andrew Cogliano, Ethan Moreau, Ales Hemsky and Kyle Brodziak had goals for the Oilers, who are in the midst of a season-high, seven-game road trip.
Ducks 5, Blues 2: At Anaheim, California, Ryan Getzlaf scored two goals, including a 190-foot (58-meter) shot into an empty net, and Jonas Hiller made 31 saves in Anaheim's victory over St. Louis. Rob Niedermayer, Teemu Selanne and Corey Perry also scored for the Ducks, who have earned 17 of a possible 18 points in the last 9 games.
