Nail Bedair put on an excellent show of his driving skills to dominate the first day of the Chevrolet Speed Star Challenge at Al-Reem Circuit here Wednesday. Bedair, who has been making waves on the national motorsport racing scene, won the rear-wheel car challenge on Day One of the event ahead of Bandar Al-Sulami and Ahmad Al-Kowaiter. “I was really hoping to stay green this weekend. It feels great to take the championship and I have to thank the ace rally driver Abdullah Bakhashab. I also have to thank Chevrolet Motorsport team for sponsoring this event, as without their assistance I couldn't have gone racing,” Bedair said. Bandar Al-Sulami came in second. “I really wanted to win the championship, and came pretty close,” stated Bandar. “I knew it was going to be extremely difficult. Finishing behind Nail Bedair was really a testament to the hard work we all put in and I would like to congratulate him on his victory.” Driving a Lumina SS, Nail Bedair clocked the best time of the evening (00:56.000). Bandar Al-Sulami came second (00:57.425) in his standard 8-cylinder Lumina SS. Ahmad Al-Kowaiter managed the third spot also driving a standard 6-cylinder Lumina SS (00:58.105). The event, organized by Abdullah Bakhashab Est. for Motorsport Development, drew a large number of racing enthusiasts who pitted their skills in a nonstop endurance battle as each tried to score the maximum number of points under the new awarding system. The first day of action was attended by enthusiastic spectators including women and children who enjoyed the high-speed action. The organizing crew also clarified that there were actually four categories in the race. The race began after grouping the participants according to their vehicles into four classes based on the capacity of the engine, its power and its production year. The vehicles were standard six cylinders, modified six cylinders, modified eight cylinders and standard eight cylinders. After the technical test on the first day, every participant had to make a free tour through the track. The drivers then had two trials to collect the best time. Drifting calls for drivers to control a car while it slides at high speeds through a marked course. It is judged on execution and style rather than on timing alone, similar to skateboarding and freestyle motocross. __
