The new James Bond film “Quantum of Solace” enjoyed a record opening weekend in Britain, knocking High School Musical off top spot after just one week, according to Screen International. Over three days, the 22nd official Bond film took 15.4 million pounds as Daniel Craig in his second outing as 007 crosses South America and Europe in an action-packed mission to discover why the woman he loved betrayed him. The amount eclipses the previous record of 14.9 million pounds held by “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” released in 2005. “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” with Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale was at No. 2 after bringing in a healthy 2.7 million pounds in its second week for a two-week total of 17.8 million. Horror movie “Saw V” was down one place at three while comedian Ricky Gervais was unchanged at four with “Ghost Town,” the story of a cantankerous dentist given a sudden glimpse into the afterlife. “Burn after Reading,” with Brad Pitt and George Clooney in a tale of health club blackmail, was down two at five, just ahead of the animated tale of evil scientists “Igor” which was unchanged at six. Hindi comedy “Golmaal Returns” was new at seven, with terrorist thriller “Eagle Eye” down three places at eight. At nine, still in the top 10 after 17 weeks, was Abba-themed musical “Mamma Mia!” which has now taken 65.5 million pounds in its long and lucrative UK run. “Hunger” featuring six weeks in the life of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, made its debut at 10. __
