Memory-boosting munchies
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 01 - 11 - 2008

I wrote a shopping list of the things I need to buy, but now that I'm ready to go I can't seem to figure out where I put my list! Does your memory fall short too at times? I did some research on nutrients that help boost the memory that will be useful for us adults and even for school students who have so much information from over 10 different subjects they need to store.
Choline
It is one of the B vitamins and it is referred to as the “memory” vitamin because of its important function in the nervous system. Choline is an essential part of the neurotransmitter in the brain acetylcholine. In addition, the presence of choline helps the flow of electrical energy in the nervous system and it protects the health of the outer covering of nerve fibers.
Choline has been given to patients suffering from memory deficiencies, muscle twitching, and Alzheimer's disease with some benefit to help improve their brain function and slow the progression of the disease.
Foods rich in choline include soybeans, egg yolk, brewer's yeast, wheat germ, fish, peanuts, some leafy greens, oatmeal, cauliflower, cabbage, and liver. You can also take a B vitamin complex or a multi vitamin and mineral formula that has between 100 mg and 500 mg of choline.
Ginkgo Biloba
This herb is known to improve circulation in the body, including increasing blood flow to the brain. It seems to aid in mental function and the ability to concentrate. So if you feel you are suffering from memory loss you can try taking a supplement of ginkgo biloba. The recommended dose is two to three tablets of 60 mg each of standardized ginkgo biloba daily. Caution: Taking ginkgo biloba with aspirin can cause bloodshot eyes.
Walnuts
Most nuts because of their high content of B vitamins and minerals are beneficial but especially walnuts are considered a brain food. And amazingly the walnut actually looks like a human brain. Walnuts contain fatty acids, lots of protein, vitamins A, B, C and E, and several minerals including iron. They are very high in fat, so it would be wise to eat about 4 to 5 walnuts a day to enhance brain function, but avoid weight gain
Raisins
Many teachers of Qur'an encourage their students to eat raisins in the morning to help their students memorize the Qur'an more easily. This may be good advice because raisins provide a boost of quick energy and they are also good sources of calcium, magnesium, iron, and the B vitamins. __
