LONDON — England survived defensive lapses to overcome Peru 3-0 Friday in its final game at Wembley Stadium here before the World Cup.
Daniel Sturridge provided the friendly match's only standout moment when he put England ahead in the 32nd minute with a shot into the top corner of the net.
“They defended well and they were very compact,” Sturridge said. “We had worked very hard throughout the week and there wasn't the match sharpness as much as we would have liked. But it was great to be out there and we are happy with the result.”
Other results involving World Cup teams Friday saw defending champion Spain beat Bolivia 2-0, Switzerland defeat Jamaica 1-0, and Iran tied Angola 1-1, and Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Ivory Coast 2-1.
In late games in South America, Uruguay beat Northern Ireland 1-0, and Chile topped Egypt 3-2.
Fernando Torres and Andres Iniesta highlighted Spain's victory in Seville. Torres calmly chipped a 51st-minute penalty kick down the middle with goalkeeper Romel Quinonez diving right, before Iniesta glided forward to curl a shot around Quinonez in the 84th to seal the victory.
In London, England's other two goals in the second half came due to Peru's inability to defend corner kicks.
Leighton Baines' set piece was headed home in the 65th minute by Gary Cahill, and Phil Jagielka found the net five minutes later after goalkeeper Raul Fernandez dropped Baines' corner.
Josip Drmic's emergence as Switzerland's best source for World Cup goals continued when his 84th-minute goal proved the difference over Jamaica. It was his third goal in two international friendlies this year.
Switzerland improved after a lackluster first half, when coach Ottmar Hitzfeld started with only five players from his likely World Cup lineup.
The Swiss host Peru next Tuesday before traveling to Brazil.
At Hartberg, Austria, Iran's Karim Ansarifard scored the equalizer in the 56th minute after being set up by Ehsan Hajsafi and delivering a low diagonal shot past keeper Delgado Elber.
Silva had scored with a header in his international debut to give Angola the lead three minutes before halftime.
Iran hasn't won since beating Kuwait in Asian Cup qualification in March. Iran has a final test against Trinidad and Tobago in Sao Paulo on June 8 before taking on Nigeria, Argentina and Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group F at the World Cup.
In St. Louis, Edin Dzeko scored twice in Bosnia-Herzegovina's victory over Ivory Coast. Bosnia made its second appearance in six months in St. Louis, where it's estimated more than 30,000 Bosnians relocated from the former war-torn Yugoslavia.
