Newcastle United moved out of the Premier League's bottom three on Tuesday with an edgy 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at St. James' Park. Midfielder Joey Barton, starting his first match since serving a jail sentence for attacking a teenager, tucked away a penalty to give Newcastle an early lead and Obafemi Martins headed a second goal before halftime. West Brom came to life after the break and for long periods dominated possession. They were rewarded midway through the second half when Ishmael Miller rounded keeper Shay Given to shoot into an empty net. Newcastle survived some anxious moments late on but held out for only its second league win of the season and its first in the four matches since Joe Kinnear became interim manager in the wake of Kevin Keegan's resignation. Victory lifts Newcastle to 15th place with nine points while West Brom is just one point better off after losing its last three matches. On Wednesday, leader Liverpool is at home to Portsmouth, which on Tuesday named former Arsenal defender Tony Adams as manager following Harry Redknapp's move to Tottenham Hotspur. Redknapp's Spurs visits north London rival Arsenal while an intriguing fixture in Humberside has second-placed Chelsea against third-placed Hull City. Man United is at home to West Ham United. Krkic gives Barca Cup win In Madrid, teenage striker Bojan Krkic gave a second-string Barcelona side a 1-0 victory over third-tier Benidorm in a King's Cup last-32, first-leg match on Tuesday. Barcelona, resting several key players including Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, created a host of chances at a rain-drenched Municipal de Foietes stadium in Benidorm but was unable to break the deadlock until the second half. The 18-year-old Krkic, who fired wide with only the goalkeeper to beat in the first half, picked the ball up in midfield in the 54th minute, ran at the defense and curled a measured shot into the right-hand corner. Leverkusen goes top In Germany, Bayern Leverkusen regained a provisional lead in the Bundesliga by winning 2-0 at Werder Bremen in the 10th round on Tuesday. By beating last season's runner-up on goals by Arturo Vidal and Manuel Friedrich, Leverkusen moved past Hoffenheim into first place with 21 points. Hoffenheim, the surprising newcomer with 19 points, plays at Bochum on Wednesday and can reclaim the top spot. Schalke also moved closer to the top with a 3-0 win in Karlsruhe. In other games, Wolfsburg beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-0 behind a pair of penalties, and Arminia Bielefeld rallied to draw 1-1 at home against fellow strugglers Energie Cottbus. Bordeaux going strong David Bellion scored twice as Bordeaux routed Le Havre 4-0 and moved to level on points with seven-time defending champion Lyon at the top of the French league on Tuesday. Argentine striker Fernando Cavenaghi scored one and was involved in the three other goals. In the 29th, Cavenaghi passed to Bellion who beat goalkeeper Christophe Revault with a powerful low shot, and Bellion got his second in the 47th when he was set up by Cavenaghi and Wendel. Cavenaghi got Bordeaux's third in the 71st with a neat finish off Marouane Chamakh's pass, and Wendel completed the rout in the 80th after Cavenaghi stepped over the ball and let it roll to Wendel.
