Cleanliness is a frequently discussed topic, but we don't seem to realize what exactly it is. Cleanliness is a goal which society has to achieve by having everyone working together, hand in hand.
Health and well-being are the chief concerns of everyone. We all need a healthy and a sound body. In order to achieve good health, hygienic standards must be observed by every individual. However, today, hygienic standards are neglected by many people. Water, water everywhere and not a drop in the taps. Sewage is overflowing in almost every old district in the city of Jeddah. Untreated sewage contaminates the atmosphere and spreads disease. The municipality is not the only one to blame for such unhygienic conditions, the city's residents also contribute to the problem. People in vehicles often eat, roll down the window and throw wrappers and uneaten food into the air. People do this to make their cars clean but they are exploiting nature; they are polluting the atmosphere. This is a one-sided war against the environment. Man thinks he is victorious, but he will bear the loss when he no longer has fresh air to breath. Dustbins are kept in every locality, but the area around the dustbin is dirtier than the dustbin itself. People usually test their basketball skills when throwing garbage, but most of them would not be eligible to play that game. It is the duty of each and every resident to keep the city neat and tidy; if you cannot clean your surroundings then you have no right to make them dirty. If we are waiting for others to start a campaign to keep the city clean, then we are completely wrong. The change should come from within ourselves. If we want to improve our surroundings, we will have to change ourselves and this is the first step on the journey of making our cities clean and green. Campaigns must be started and the municipality must enforce laws and fine people for littering the roads, parks and other public places. This can be done; it has already been put into practice successfully in many other cities. Clean Jeddah! Green Jeddah! Imbesat Syed, Jeddah
