I am writing with regard to the article “Iqama transfer without sponsor's consent” (May 3). How is this possible when almost all employers hold the passports of expats which although it is illegal to do so is still widely practiced? The intention of the new regulation is good and I hope for its prompt implementation. Mohammad, Online response II. Expatriates welcome this new initiative of the Ministry of Labor. Now expats in the Kingdom will have more job security and work opportunities. Measures should also be taken to allow expats to have custody of their own passports which will give them increased flexibility to switch jobs. Mohammed Abdul Mohsin, Online response III. If the Ministry of Labor enforces this law, it will really increase the faith of expatriates in the laws of Saudi Arabia. Many expats think all the laws are really made for the benefit of Saudi citizens, this new regulation will make them see that this is not so. Mohib Sidiqui, Online response IV. It will be good for all expatriates but if any employee changes his sponsorship without the approval of his company even if his contract period has been completed, the company will hold his service award and other benefits. So I think that this new law should include a way for employees to get their benefits after leaving their company as soon as possible. Mohammad Danish, Online response
