Bouchard battles into Portugal quarterfinals

OEIRAS, Portugal — Second seed Eugenie Bouchard reached a European claycourt quarterfinal for the second time in her career as the Canadian defeated Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 6-2 Wednesday at the ATP-WTA Portugal Open.
The 20-year-old debutante at the Jamor Sports Complex, ranked 18th, won the last four games of the opening set from 2-4 down and had to keep up the fight in the second set to ease past the 65th-ranked Kazakh in a first-time meeting.
The final game of the opening set was a marathon, comprising seven deuces. Top seed Carla Suarez Navarro inflicted a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing on Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
Italian fourth seed Roberta Vinci also showed lethal form, winning the first 10 games in a 6-0, 6-2 hammering of 2009 champion Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.
Russian Elena Vesnina, the No. 8, needed three hours to get past Serb Bojana Jovanovski 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7), while Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky, ranked 165th, continued her surge of form with a 7-5, 6-0 defeat of Tunisian Ons Jabeur.
Portugal's Gastao Elias wrapped up the men's first round as he beat Italian Filippo Volandri 6-4, 6-3.
Kohlschreiber upset
Two-time former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber was knocked out in the first round of the BMW Open after losing 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to Denis Istomin in Munich Tuesday.
There were further upsets when Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff defeated sixth-seeded Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 and qualifier Thomaz Bellucci beat No. 8 seed Ivan Dodig 7-6 (0), 6-4.
Spain's Albert Ramos defeated former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-0 and will next face Andreas Seppi, the only seeded player to survive the first round Tuesday. The seventh-seeded Italian defeated Germany's Michael Berrer, 6-3, 7-5.
Also, Martin Klizan eased past Dudi Sela 6-1, 6-2 to set up a second round clash with No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny, and Juergen Melzer beat wild card entrant Alexander Zverev by the same score.
Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky rallied after losing the first set to beat German wild card Peter Gojowczyk 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. — Agencies
