Cano fires Mariners to victory over Yanks
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 01 - 05 - 2014

NEW YORK — Second baseman Robinson Cano drove in a run and scored an insurance marker on his return to Yankee Stadium and catcher Mike Zunino had his first career four-hit game as the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Yankees 6-3 in the American League Tuesday.
Cano returned to New York after spending the previous nine seasons with the Yankees (15-11), whom he left for a 10-year, $240 million deal after being offered a seven-year, $175 million deal.
His welcome was far from being a warm one, however, and he heard boos on many occasions as he helped the Mariners improve to (11-14).
Red Sox 7, Rays 4: John Lackey turned in his second straight strong performance and the Boston Red Sox broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the sixth inning en route to a victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Lackey, who pitched eight innings to beat the New York Yankees last Wednesday, pitched eight innings on a frigid Fenway Park night to raise his record to 4-2 and give the Red Sox (13-14) their third win in the last four games.
A's 9, Rangers 3: Catcher Derek Norris and right fielder Josh Reddick each had three RBIs for the Oakland Athletics in their victory over the Texas Rangers.
Norris was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Reddick 1-for-4 with a two-run single in the Athletics' decisive five-run fifth inning, all in support of left-hander Scott Kazmir (4-0), who allowed three runs over five innings. Oakland improved to 17-10, two games clear of Texas (15-12) in the American League West.
Other results: Royals 10, Blue Jays 7; Angels 6, Indians 4; Giants 6, Padres 0.
National League
Giants 6, Padres 0: Emergency San Francisco Giants starter Yusmeiro Petit shut out the San Diego Padres on three hits over six innings, and his San Francisco teammates backed him with the club's first two-home run first inning at home in almost six years, leading the Giants to victory.
In evening the three-game series at a win apiece, the Giants (16-11) had to change pitchers about an hour before game time when scheduled starter Matt Cain cut his right index finger on a knife in the clubhouse and had to be scratched.
Reds 3, Cubs 2: Center fielder Billy Hamilton collected three hits, including his first career home run, and right-hander Alfredo Simon pitched six strong innings, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a victory over the Chicago Cubs.
The game was delayed by rain on three separate occasions for a total of one hour and 45 minutes. Hamilton went 3-for-4 with a homer, walk, stolen base and scored twice for Cincinnati (12-14).
Mets 6, Phillies 1: Left-hander Jonathon Niese, working in raw, blustery conditions, scattered four hits over seven strong innings as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies.
Second baseman Daniel Murphy went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and shortstop Ruben Tejada drove in two runs for the Mets (15-11), who won for the fifth time in six games.
Marlins 9, Braves 0: Jose Fernandez shut down the Atlanta Braves for the second time in eight days in leading the Miami Marlins to a 9-0 win.
Fernandez (4-1) allowed two hits, two walks and no runs in eight innings, striking out eight. In two games over those eight days, Fernandez held Atlanta scoreless for 16 innings, striking out 22. Atlanta (17-8) had its four-game winning streak snapped, losing for the first time since Fernandez beat them 1-0 last Tuesday.
Other results: Brewers 5, Cardinals 4 (11 innings); Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 4.
Inter-League
Nationals 4, Astros 3: First baseman Andy LaRoche delivered the game-tying hit in the eighth inning and the go-ahead RBI single in the ninth as the Washington Nationals rallied for a victory over the Houston Astros.
The Houston (9-18) bullpen blew a save opportunity for the sixth time this season. Washington improved to 15-12. — Agencies
