Holder Mark Calcavecchia battled strong winds to move into a share of the clubhouse lead in the weather-hit second round of the Tampa Bay Championship at Palm Harbour on Friday.
The 47-year-old American bogeyed three of the last seven holes for a one-under-par 70 on the challenging Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.
That left him at three-under 139, level with compatriots Lee Janzen (74) and Billy Mayfair (71), Australia's Stuart Appleby (73) and Paul Casey of Britain (72). American Jeff Maggert, helped by three birdies in the first four holes, held the outright lead at eight under with nine holes remaining when play was suspended for the day due to the threat of lightning.
Maggert, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour, was one of 71 players still out on the course who were scheduled to complete the second round early on Saturday morning.
The tournament had already been set back two-and-a-half hours by an afternoon thunderstorm on Thursday, forcing 72 players to return on early Friday.
Twice US Open champion Janzen was the most successful player to complete the first round earlier in the day, making a birdie at the par-four 16th to join fellow American Bart Bryant in a tie lead. However, Janzen followed his opening 65 with a five-bogey 74 to slip back to three under overall.
The halfway cut was projected to fall at one-over 143 with world number three Ernie Els in danger of missing out. South African Els carded a second successive 73 for a four-over total.Hedblom leads by 2 strokes
Defending champion Peter Hedblom of Sweden shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead after the third round of the $2-million Malaysian Open on Saturday.
The lead changed several times during the day but Hedblom picked up seven birdies to emerge as the man to beat heading into the final round at the Kota Permai Golf Club.
Hedblom has a three-day total of 17-under-par 199, two ahead of Argentina's Daniel Vancsik, who shot an eight-under-par 64.
Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen (69), Briton Simon Dyson (67) and Indian Jyoti Randhawa (70) share third place on 14
