This refers to the article "Ways and means to check illegals" by Ali Saad Al-Musa (Feb 26). Renewing iqama (residence permit) is the responsibility of the sponsor or company that hired the workers. If if it could not renew its workers' iqama for its failure to meet the Nitaqat requirements, why are the authorities punishing the expats instead of their sponsors? Expats are not given the right to renew their iqamas, so the responsibility lies on the sponsors. Visit each center to find out how many expats have expired residence permits because of their sponsors' failure to renew them. The Kingdom has a very complicated labor law that do not punish employers for their failure to renew the workers' iqamas and instead crack down on the workers themselves whose stay has become illegal because of their sponsors' failure to renew their residence permits.
