Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 02 - 2014

RIYADH — The Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh commemorated the Great Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day at the chancery premises on Friday in a befitting manner.
The program began with the recitation of the Holy Qur'an. Ambassador Md. Shahidul Islam hoisted the national flag at half-mast and read out messages from the president and prime minister.
The embassy also organized art, essay, poem writing and recitation competitions for children as a part of the commemorations. All embassy officials and staff, teachers and students of Bangladesh International Schools in Riyadh and over 700 community members attended the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Islam paid sincere tributes to the martyrs who made supreme sacrifices for the nation. He paid tributes to the Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and highlighted his legendary leadership in the language movement.
The ambassador called upon all Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia to work hard to enhance the image of Bangladesh in the Kingdom and contribute to Bangladesh's economic development. He pointed out that Bangladesh has made significant progress in the last 42 years and has enough potential.
Highlighting the significance and spirit of the day, he underlined the need for renewing the commitment and reinforcing concerted efforts for the socio-economic development of the country.
He also expressed his appreciation for the expatriate community for their invaluable contribution to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh and urged them to do more for their beloved motherland.
The embassy organized a musical program where the students and teachers of both Bangla and English sections of Bangladesh International School in Riyadh sang patriotic songs eulogizing the martyrs. Members of the Bangladesh community took part in a poetry recitation program.
The ambassador distributed prizes and certificates to winners of various competitions organized by the mission. The program ended with a special prayer seeking salvation for those who sacrificed their lives during the war of independence and for continued peace, progress and prosperity of Bangladesh. — SG
