Australia rests stars for final ODIs vs. England
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 21 - 01 - 2014

Shaun Marsh
SYDNEY — With the one-day series already won, Australia announced that several stars will miss one or both of the remaining matches against England in Perth next Friday and Adelaide Sunday.
Leading runmakers David Warner, man-of-the-match with 71 off 70 balls in Sunday night's emphatic victory, and wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin will skip the two matches.
National Selector John Inverarity said Monday they would “take a well-deserved break” while skipper Michael Clarke would not play in Perth.
“He will re-join the ODI squad for Adelaide, as will Shane Watson,” Inverarity said. “George Bailey will captain the team in Perth and Mitch(ell) Johnson has been appointed vice captain for this fixture.”
Australia squad: George Bailey, Michael Clarke (Adelaide only), Mitchell Johnson, Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, Steve Smith, Matthew Wade, Shane Watson (Adelaide only).
T20 squad
Cricket Australia Monday challenged its Twenty20 squad to use the England series to fight for a place in the side heading to the short format's world championship.
Australia unveiled a 14-man squad for the three matches against England with George Bailey named captain after being dropped from the Test side to tour world No. 1 South Africa next month.
All-rounder James Faulkner is the only member of the T20 squad to make the tour of the republic with selectors deciding to prioritize the Test side after the Ashes triumph.
Australia will on Feb. 16 name the 15-man squad for the World Twenty20 scheduled to be held in Bangladesh over March-April.
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc was included in the squad as he recovers from a stress fracture in his back.
T20 squad: George Bailey (captain), Aaron Finch (vice captain), Dan Christian, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ben Cutting, James Faulkner, Josh Hazelwood, Moises Henriques, Glenn Maxwell, James Muirhead, Chris Lynn, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, Cameron White.
New blood for SA tour
After a stunning Ashes triumph, Australia added specialist batsmen to a 15-man squad unveiled Monday for the upcoming tour against world No. 1 South Africa.
Uncapped Tasmanian Alex Doolan joins Shaun Marsh who returns to the Test scene after almost two years.
Losing out is Ashes No. 6 George Bailey whose game is “less suited to their (bowling) attack,” said chairman of selectors John Inverarity.
Doolan came in for particular praise for his technique against pace bowling. Marsh meanwhile scored a century on his Test debut, but has struggled with injury and form.
Other changes see the return from long-term injury of pace bowlers James Pattinson and Jackson Bird.
The squad departs Jan. 29, apart from all-rounder James Faulkner who stays back to play in the T20 series against England. He will join the team during the warm-up game in Potchefstroom (Feb. 5-8).
Australia squad: Michael Clarke (captain), Brad Haddin (vice captain), Jackson Bird, Alex Doolan, James Faulkner, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Nathan Lyon, James Pattinson, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, David Warner, Shane Watson. — Agencies
