A delegation from Jeddah Municipality will participate in the three-day global dengue fever conference in Thailand starting Wednesday. Khaled Aqeel, the head of the delegation and Undersecretary for Services in the municipality, said the Saudi delegation will submit a scientific paper on non-traditional methods to eradicate mosquitoes transmitting dengue fever in Jeddah and its environs. The Ministry of Health will introduce the ways being used to treat dengue fever patients. The municipality delegation's paper deals with the scientific ways deployed including comprehensive mosquito control methods such as the use of chemicals and pesticides, filling of wetlands and covering water tanks in and outside the homes. He said the municipality has devised new methods to deal with the areas where drinking water is not supplied on a regular basis. “People in these areas are forced to store water in containers, which inevitably leads to a proliferation of mosquitoes,” Aqeel said. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, he said, the municipality has also launched an awareness campaign to educate citizens on means to avoid contracting dengue fever. As part of the campaign, the municipality has distributed leaflets in five languages, Aqeel said. __
