Dustin Penner scored with 5.4 seconds remaining to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in their season-opener on Sunday. Penner redirected an Ethan Moreau shot past Avs goalie Peter Budaj to clinch his second goal of the game and get the Oilers' 30th NHL season off to the perfect start. The Oilers winger banked in a shot earlier in the third to give Edmonton, who wore retro uniforms, a 2-1 lead. Colorado leveled the score on Milan Hejduk's penalty shot with 10 minutes remaining in the Northwest Division contest after the Oilers were penalised for covering up the puck in the crease. Shawn Horcoff's power-play goal 6:59 into the first period opened Edmonton's scoring. Ales Hemsky fed Horcoff at the corner of the crease and the Oilers center scored on Edmonton's second shot of the season. The Avs, who lost 5-4 to the Boston Bruins in their opener on Thursday, evened the score 11:15 into the second on Joe Sakic's goal. Edmonton netminder Mathieu Garon stopped 31 shots, including 10 in the first period and 14 of 15 in the second, for the victory.
