JEDDAH — A number of Jeddah residents have begun a campaign on Twitter calling for a boycott of fish in response to what they claim are continuously increasing prices. The central fish market in Jeddah has witnessed unjustified rises in prices for all types of fish, especially those that are most in demand, said the residents. The market's management has said it is normal for prices to increase when supply is low. They said prices usually increase at the beginning of the month when salaries are paid to government employees. Some workers in the market said due to the cold weather fish migrate from the shores to warmer areas and available stocks deplete as a result. Others said the crackdown campaign against illegal expatriates led to a shortage of labor that in turn resulted in the price increases. Hamour, one of the most sought after fish in the Jeddah central market, was selling for SR70 a kilo. Jeddah Municipality said it destroyed 3,360 kilos of rotten fish during a recent inspection campaign. — SG
