Second seed Dinara Safina avoided the exit after outlasting former world number one Amelie Mauresmo 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the last match on centre court which finished near midnight. Elena Dementieva outlasted Slovenian qualifier Katarina Srebotnik 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to reach the quarter-finals. Bjorkman makes history For once, doubles took center stage at the Stockholm Open. Jonas Bjorkman played his 1,000th career ATP doubles match on Wednesday, teaming with Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe to beat Americans Scott Lipsky and David Martin 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. In singles, third-seeded Jarkko Nieminen rallied from a set down to beat Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 in the first round. Rainer Schuettler of Germany and Oscar Hernandez of Spain reached the quarterfinals in different fashion. Gonzalez prevails Fernando Gonzalez saved five match points before beating Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 4-6, 7-6 (11), 6-1 Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the BA Tennis Trophy. Fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain and German qualifier Philipp Petzschner also reached the quarterfinals. Verdasco, who is ranked 13th, beat Guillermo Canas of Argentina 6-1, 6-2. Petzschner, who eliminated top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka on Tuesday, defeated Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4. In first-round play, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina defeated Martin Fischer of Austria 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5). The 219th-ranked Fischer missed a set point in the first-set tiebreaker and went a break up in the second, but the third-ranked Del Potro came back and converted his third match point. Del Potro next plays Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the quarterfinals.
