Lessons from the #Amnesty
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 11 - 2013

We have learned that policies in this country are addressed by arrogance rather than by a solution oriented approach. By arrogance I mean that the Saudization/Nitaqat policy never took expats or the children of Saudi women into consideration as human beings or more importantly as part of the equation of solving the unemployment crisis. The unemployment issue cannot be solved in a few weeks by using scaremongering tactics against expats and their Saudi employers; nor can it be solved by using some media outlets to stoke the fires of racism directed at the expatriate community.
Moizuddin G. Muqri
That you should be legal in order to work here and that is a good step, but they should also consider that the changes do not come within months, it takes a lot of time.
Zubair Warsi
I've learned that people can be dumber than a sack of bricks. Given six months to rectify their status and they still do nothing.
Alan Holden
I have noticed that all employers are now afraid of penalties and that is why they have agreed to give us a proper legal Iqama. I have learned that Saudi Arabia is a better place for expats to work if you just follow the rules and regulations. We are here to do our job and not to do any illegal work. Some expats are really bad and need to be deported. The amnesty program is for us, for our own security.
Prince Jules
A lot of money was collected by the embassies in the name of documents, etc., without providing any help to the people of their community.
Mohammad Wisal
At the end of the day, this is still their country, not ours (expats). Their land, their rules. It's as simple as that.
JE Batin Jr.
I have learned that all this is going to backfire and Saudi Arabia will need more cheap labor and then they'll stop chasing expatriates and call them back again.
Asman Omar
The amnesty was given to somehow correct mistakes. The question is: Who actually created the problem in the first place?
Hassan Sobehy
I've learned that there are no changes at all especially for those legal workers who are still receiving a very low salary with a large volume of work and long hours.
Roel Dela Rosa
