MAKKAH — The commander in charge of Haj security helicopters said a special security helicopter base would be constructed in the holy sites. The base will cover an area of 5 million sq. meters and is expected to be completed soon, said Maj. Gen. Mohammad Al-Harbi. He pointed out that 18 security helicopters are ready to participate in this year's Haj. These helicopters are entrusted with monitoring pilgrims' movements on the roads and bridges. They are commanded by Saudi pilots who have received their training in the US in addition to technical teams trained in Australia. Al-Harbi said there are future plans to construct additional bases in a number of areas. All roads have been surveyed and are monitored, while no unusual activities have been recorded, he said. Al-Harbi said all helicopters are equipped with the latest equipment and special medical teams will participate for the first time this Haj.
