Saleh Al-Khilaiwi, Director General of Customs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Organization for King Fahd Causeway said in a press statement Thursday that the causeway is undergoing several expansion projects costing SR62.5 million over the next five years. The projects will work to increase the passenger vehicle capacity by 350 percent and by 200 percent for the cargo areas in under five years. Areas will be redistributed and critical areas will be expanded by 70 percent with the expansions to the passenger areas costing 14.8 million whereas the cargo area expansions will cost 6.97 million, In 2008, 21,250 vehicles crossed the causeway every day compared to the 7,778 vehicles in 1999. The number of trucks increased from 312 in 1999 to 1,672 in 2008.
