Bautista knocks out Tipsarevic at St. Petersburg Open
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 19 - 09 - 2013

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Janko Tipsarevic suffered an earlier exit at the St. Petersburg Open than his third seeding promised, as he fell to Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 7-6 (3 ), 6-3 in the first round Wednesday.
Tipsarevic, who won the decisive third point in Serbia's Davis Cup semifinal win over Canada on Sunday, squandered seven break points in the second set against Bautista Agut, who broke the Serb twice and closed the match with a backhand down the line on his first match point. Earlier, sixth-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia and seventh-seeded Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic both advanced to the second round in straight sets.
Pavlyuchenkova in quarters
Already a two-time winner this year, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia reached the Korea Open quarterfinals by beating wild card Lee Ye-ra of South Korea 6-4, 6-1 Wednesday.
Pavlyuchenkova, who won her fourth and fifth career titles in April in Monterrey and Estoril, will line up against Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, who defeated sixth-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany 6-4, 6-0.
The eighth-seeded Annika Beck of Germany also fell, to Vera Dushevina of Russia 6-3, 7-5.
Also through were Lara Arruabarrena of Spain, into her first quarterfinals since February, and Francesca Schiavone of Italy, who last made the last eight on Birmingham grass in June.
King, Konta through
Qualifiers Vania King of the United States and Johanna Konta of Britain made it to the Guangzhou Open quarterfinals Wednesday.
King, a main-draw winner as a qualifier for the fourth time this year, defeated Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 to reach her first quarterfinals in 14 months.
Konta upset No. 4-seeded Shuai Peng of China 6-1, 6-3 to book her first career quarterfinal against another Chinese, Shuai Zhang, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over defending champion Su-wei Hsieh of Taiwan.
Other second-round winners included No. 2 Alize Cornet of France, No. 3 Laura Robson of Britain, and No. 8 Monica Puig from Puerto Rico.
Tsonga wins on return
In France, defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made a winning return to tennis Wednesday, beating fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Moselle Open.
Sam Querrey of the United States and Tobias Kamke of Germany also advanced to the last eight.
Tsonga will now meet Kamke, who rallied from a set and a break down to see off Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The sixth-seeded Querrey led 6-2 when his opponent, French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu, retired because of a right thigh injury. Carlos Berlocq of Argentina and Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut and Albano Olivetti also advanced. — Agencies
