ABHA – For the first time in the history of Saudi cinema, “Wajda”, a movie directed by Saudi director Hyfa Al-Mansour, has been nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, according to Sultan Al-Bazee, director of the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts (SASCA). The movie had a huge success around the world in the various film fares and represented the Kingdom at numerous international festivals, Al-Bazee said. “We're happy that the story has connected us with people and nations beyond our borders,” he added. The movie revolves around a ten-year-old girl, named Wadja, who dreams of having her own bicycle. However, social norms and traditions stand in the way of her dream. The movie was shown last year at the Venice Film Festival and won the best Arabic movie in the Dubai Film Festival recently. — SG
