With regard to the report "Doubling of speed fines may be revoked" (Sep. 12), the authorities have again overestimated the effect of speed cameras on reckless driving. Reckless driving is the source of most traffic accidents and of most of the unnecessary deaths caused by these accidents. Reckless driving has nothing to do with speeding. You can drive recklessly in dense traffic without exceeding any speed limit, jeopardizing other drivers and their passengers as well as pedestrians. The only way to stop this is to institute intensive police patrols, not police cars stopped by the side of the road with officers busy chatting on cellphones. Barthol, Online response II. If the fine was meant to be affordable, it wouldn't work. If you cannot afford the fine, don't drive over the speed limit. S, Online response
