RIYADH – The Kingdom marked International Literacy Day on Sunday by showcasing its efforts to eradicate illiteracy in the Kingdom. One initiative to tackle illiteracy involved the establishment of specialist centers and education programs for illiterate men and women. Director general for adult education Nasser Al-Huqbani said recent ministry statistics show that there are 925 anti-illiteracy centers throughout the Kingdom, with 16,311 men and women studying in them. Al-Huqbani said this occasion is an opportunity to mobilize society to participate in supporting anti-illiteracy projects and create awareness on the importance of adult education. The Kingdom has won several UNESCO literacy prizes over the past two decades for its efforts in combating illiteracy. — SG/SPA
