Ten former major league players, including Joe Torre, Gil Hodges and Maury Wills, will be considered for election to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee, it was announced on Tuesday. Voting for the 10 players, whose careers began in 1943 or later, will be conducted by the 64 living members of the Hall of Fame. Any candidate who receives 75 percent of the vote will earn election and be enshrined on July 26, 2009. Also being considered are Dick Allen, Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Al Oliver, Vada Pinson, Ron Santo and Luis Tiant. The results of the voting by the Veterans Committee will be announced on Dec. 8 at baseball's Winter Meetings, hall officials said. Torre has managed five franchises and is currently skipper of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a nine times All-Star during his playing career with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, St Louis Cardinals and New York Mets.
