The article "Shoura Council should drop traffic fines" (Aug. 3) was a dampener for motorist who want to follow traffic rules. I agree with the reader whose letter was published on Sunday that instead of dropping the fines, the licenses of those who violate traffic rules should be withdrawn. We have so many motorist who violate traffic rules, especially during the Ramadan season. I think the traffic police should start a campaign for safe driving and get tough with violators of traffic rules, regardless of whether they are Saudis or expatriates. So many accidents happen because of reckless driving. It seems that motorists here have developed a culture to get ahead of other motorists and have not learned the virtue of defensive driving. We often see motorists who are turning left taking the far right lane when they see that it is vacant in their desire to get ahead. This makes it difficult, if not inconvenient, for other motorist who are going straight ahead. I have yet to see a policeman giving a ticket to motorists who position themselves on the far right lane although they are turning left. Often traffic policemen turn a blind eye. We should educate motorists on defensive driving and other safety driving methods to avoid accidents. It is sad if wives and children lose the head of the family just because of the recklessness of some motorists. I hope reckless drivers would understand this. And I hope the traffic police launch safe-driving campaign and get tough on notorious traffic violators. Let us keep our roads safe. An expatriate, Riyadh
