JEDDAH — "My dream is to have my name be synonymous to Saudi art." Saudi street artist Shaweesh, originally from Asir, was born and based in Riyadh. With the ongoing burgeoning art scene in Saudi Arabia, many young Saudi artists have realized their dreams of being pervasively recognized throughout a fast period of time. Much like his inspiration Banksy, he believes in initiating dialogue on the streets with his interpretations and impressionable art. He recently participated in RHIZOMA- Generation in waiting at Edge of Arabia that sent a strong pervasive message from a new generation of artists who formulate art in their own way in Saudi Arabia. In an exclusive interview with Saudi Gazette, he said: "I might have struggled at first to be recognized, but now the support and response from the audiences at the exhibits has been overwhelming." His recognition goes beyond social media streaming and hyped art galleries to royalty. When asked about a seminal experience, he explained: "One very seminal experience was designing a poster for Princess Ameerah Al-Taweel, which she then requested that I print for her. The recognition I received from such an influential figure inspired me to do much more." Shaweesh said the role of the artist in Saudi Arabia is to be a mirror to the society from which he/she draws inspiration for their art. "I blend global pop culture with genuine Saudi traditional themes and historical images to make works of harmonious chaos." He began in 2009 with graffiti art, and expanded his expertise to digital, street and pop art. Shaweesh pursues US pop culture and classic Arabic themes of art. He has also worked as an actor and as a graphic designer. Which is why he said his favorite place has to be C3 Films studio/office in Riyadh. Talking about inspiration, he said it revolved around his "everyday life, friends, traveling, walking on the street, everything." He said patience and hard work are two of the most integral factors in work for a young aspiring artist, while it also helps to be at the right place at the right time. When asked “Why art?” He said: "Why not? It's something I love to do and is something I can do well. And when I do it, people pay attention." However he refused to comment on current projects with Edge of Arabia. Shaweesh identifies with the works of the London-based street artist Banksy, the works of pop artist Andy Warhol, and the art of John Baldessari. His favorite artwork includes Joseph Beuys artworks.
