Two Saudi professors at universities outside the Kingdom were named as first place winners of this year's Kingdom International Prize for Environmental Management. Dr. Sabah Bint Ahmad from Sultan Qaboos University in Oman and Dr. Mai Afeef Mas'oud from the American University in Beirut were both given the awards for their developments in helping protect the environment. The awards were approved Saturday by Prince Turki Bin Nasir Bin Abdul Aziz, President for Meteorology and Environmental Protection. Dr. Ahmad was given the award for her work in developing a new technique in detecting oil pollution as well as determining its depth. Dr. Mas'oud was given the award for her research on factors influencing the strategies of river management in developing countries. Several other professors were awarded prizes for their work in environmental protection. The second prize was awarded to Dr. Mohammad Othman Al-Jahdali and Dr. Saleh Bin Bishr from the University of Science and Technology in Jordan. The third prize was awarded to Dr. Mohammad Al-Rababi'ah and Dr. Mohammad Nour Al-Hamad from King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah. In the second category awarded to government departments, the first prize was awarded to the Abu Dhabi Commission in the UAE and the Riyadh Mayoralty in the Kingdom. In the private sector category the first prize went to the Khaleej Company for Petrochemicals in Bahrain. In the fourth and final category of national societies the first prize went to the Society for the Mediterranean Network for Sustainable Development in Tunisia.
