England and France had been trying to link their two countries since 1802, but their hopes were finally realized when work began on a 32-mile rail tunnel beneath the English Channel in 1988. By 1994 the tunnel commenced operating its services, linking London to Paris and Brussels, through rail freight services and vehicle shuttle services. __
