Angry Pennetta in Bali quarters
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 12 - 09 - 2008

Irritated Italian Flavia Pennetta overcame the annoyance of an ice-pack treatment timeout by Anastasia Rodionova on the way to a bad-tempered 6-3, 7-5 win on Thursday at the Bali Open.
In the quarters Pennetta will face Tamira Paszek of Austria, who upset seventh-seeded Italian Sara Errani 6-0, 7-6 (2) in their second-round match.
Fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia also advanced, beating Italy's Tathiana Garbin 6-1, 6-1, while No. 9 Peng Shuai of China was upset by Chan Yung-jan of Taiwan, who won 6-1, 7-5.
“I was angry,” said the third seed, a US Open quarterfinalist still feeling the effects of the 12-hour time change between New York and this tropical island. “If you are unable to play you should not stay on the court,” she said after her 77th-ranked opponent finally lost a second-round contest filled with fitness drama.
Rodionova was stretched out on the side of the court as she lost a 4-0 lead in the second set, her legs raised on a chair while ice packs were rubbed on her limbs and torso by the trainer at 5-4. Pennetta, who revealed she herself “could not breathe” as she lost a dozen straight points to start the set, fumed at the service line during the treatment.
The Italian quickly took her anger out on her weakened opponent, coming through for the win that put her into the quarterfinals as she concluded with her seventh ace. “Those last three or four games were not nice for us or the public,” said the world number 16. “The match was also tough for me but I didn't call for the trainer.”
The Italian hopes to continue a solid run on hardcourt over the last few months, having played a California final and then making the last eight of the Grand Slam, where she lost to Dinara Safina. “It is very humid and hot. I'm still getting over the jet-lag,” she added. “I'm here alone without a coach and I'm just working match-by-match.”
Gasquet advances
In Romania, top-seeded Richard Gasquet easily defeated Romania's Victor Crivoi 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the BCR Open Romania.
It took Gasquet, seeded 12th by ATP, just over an hour to overcome little-known Romanian player Crivoi. The 22-year-old Frenchman easily surpassed his opponent by winning points from his service and return.
Also Thursday, 8th seeded Jose Acasusuo advanced the quarterfinals after defeating fellow Argentinian player Martin Vassallo Arguell 6-4, 7-5.
Ivan Navarro of Spain defeated Denis Gremelmayr of Germany, 6-3, 1-0 after the German player retired, and Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili defeated Adrian Cruciat of Romania 6-1, 6
