Saudi foreign minister emphasizes urgent need to reform the UN
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 09 - 2024

NEW YORK — Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan emphasized the Kingdom's commitment to reforming the United Nations to enhance its effectiveness in addressing global threats and humanitarian crises.
Prince Faisal made his remarks on Monday at the Summit of the Future, held during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York.
In his address on behalf of King Salman, Prince Faisal highlighted the UN's failure to resolve the humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine and stressed the need for a new international framework that supports sustainable development and equitable growth, particularly for developing nations.
He stated, "For our ambition for a better future to be realized, reforming the UN system has become an urgent necessity."
The foreign minister noted that Saudi Arabia has actively participated in shaping the Charter of the Future, which aims to improve multilateral cooperation and ensure that international institutions respond effectively to contemporary challenges.
He expressed hope that this charter would mark a qualitative shift in multilateral work and contribute to establishing a fair and responsive international system.
Regarding climate change, Prince Faisal underscored the importance of addressing its challenges while considering the diverse circumstances and capacities of nations.
He emphasized that energy transitions must be based on three core principles: energy security, economic prosperity, and addressing the impacts of climate change, without compromising any one of them.
He concluded his remarks by reaffirming Saudi Arabia's determination to achieve the goals outlined in the charter, aligning them with the Kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030 development plan and its commitment to enhancing international cooperation.
The Saudi delegation at the summit included Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan, Ambassador to the United States; Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Al-Swaha; Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Al-Ibrahim; and several other senior officials.
