Diriyah: The cradle of Saudi sovereignty celebrates Founding Day with rich history
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 21 - 02 - 2024

RIYADH — Diriyah, the birthplace of the Saudi state, commemorates Founding Day on February 22, 2024, marking nearly three centuries since the establishment of the first Saudi state by Imam Muhammad bin Saud in 1727. This day signifies a momentous occasion, celebrating the deep historical roots and the enduring legacy of the Kingdom under the leadership of its founders and successive leaders.
The story of Diriyah begins with the settlement of the Banu Hanifa tribe in the central Arabian Peninsula, evolving into a political and cultural hub that laid the groundwork for the Saudi state's formation. The establishment of Diriyah as a city-state by Prince Manea bin Rabia Al-Muridy in 1446 AD marked a pivotal turning point, introducing a governance model that was unique in the region.
With Diriyah as its capital, the first Saudi State flourished under Imam Mohammed bin Saud's leadership, emphasizing principles of genuine Islam, rational governance, and a commitment to the welfare of its citizens and the Islamic community. This period saw Diriyah emerge as a beacon of stability, prosperity, and independence, fostering a sense of unity and national identity among its people.
The Royal Decree issued on January 27, 2022, designating February 22 as "Founding Day," acknowledges the profound historical significance of Diriyah and the foundational values that have guided the Kingdom through centuries of growth and transformation. As Saudi Arabia continues to advance under the visionary leadership of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Founding Day serves as a reminder of the Kingdom's rich heritage and its journey toward modernization and global prominence.
Founding Day is not only a reflection of the Kingdom's past but also a celebration of its present and future, as Saudi Arabia strides confidently toward realizing Vision 2030. The commemorations across the Kingdom, including cultural and artistic events, underscore the pride and unity of the Saudi people, honoring the legacy of their ancestors and the bright future that lies ahead.
As Diriyah stands today, it is a testament to the enduring spirit and vision of the Saudi state, from its early days as a fortified city to its role as a cultural and economic powerhouse in the modern era. The historical significance of Diriyah and its contribution to the formation and development of the Saudi state will forever be cherished by the people of Saudi Arabia, as they celebrate Founding Day with a deep sense of pride and gratitude.
