De Jong credits Riyadh fans for boosting Barcelona to El Clasico final

RIYADH — Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong attributed the team's recent success in the Spanish Super Cup 2024 semifinals to the overwhelming support from Riyadh fans. He is optimistic that this encouragement will boost Barcelona to victory in the much-anticipated final against Real Madrid on Sunday.
Barcelona's triumph over CA Osasuna, with a 2-0 scoreline at Al Awwal Park, was propelled by goals from Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal, setting the stage for a consecutive El Clasico Spanish Super Cup final in Riyadh. De Jong, who played a pivotal role in Barcelona's 3-1 victory over Real Madrid last year, is counting on the support of the Saudi fanbase for a repeat success.
"The fans' support is invigorating; it fuels us on the field. Their backing was instrumental in the semi-final, and we hope for their continued support this Sunday," said De Jong.
"These high-stake matches are what every player dreams of. We are determined to clinch the Super Cup, but with two top teams, the outcome is unpredictable. Nevertheless, I am confident in our chances."
Barcelona welcomed Pedri back from injury in the semi-final, with the midfielder making a significant 30-minute appearance after a month's absence. De Jong highlighted Pedri's vital role, saying, "Pedri's extraordinary talent is pivotal to our team's performance. His presence smoothens our play, and we're thrilled to have him back for the final."
The grand finale is scheduled at Al Awwal Park, Al Nassr's home ground, with a 10 pm kickoff in Saudi Arabian time. Real Madrid secured their spot in the final following an exhilarating 5-3 extra-time victory against Atletico Madrid.
This year's tournament marks the fourth occasion of the Spanish Super Cup being hosted in Saudi Arabia. Real Madrid clinched the trophy in 2020 and 2022 against Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, respectively, in Jeddah and Riyadh. Last year, Barcelona triumphed over Real Madrid 3-1 in Riyadh, with Gavi, Lewandowski, and Pedri scoring for Barcelona and Karim Benzema, now with Al Ittihad, scoring for Real Madrid.
