Published in The Saudi Gazette on 11 - 09 - 2023

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia, serving as the Chair of the 45th UNESCO World Heritage Committee, is hosting an extended session taking place from September 10 to 25 in Riyadh. This landmark event marks the first in-person session of the World Heritage Committee in four years.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is composed of representatives from 21 states who are elected by the General Assembly. Their collective responsibilities include implementing the World Heritage Convention, managing the utilization of the World Heritage Fund, determining which sites deserve a place on the prestigious World Heritage List, and overseeing the conservation efforts of World Heritage Sites around the globe.
Saudi Arabia's election as Chair of the 45th UNESCO World Heritage Committee, along with the privilege to host the extended 45th session in Riyadh, underscores the Kingdom's pivotal role in advocating the preservation and protection of global heritage. This aligns seamlessly with UNESCO's overarching objectives and aspirations.
The proceedings of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee kicked off with a captivating opening ceremony held at the historic Al-Murabba Palace. The theme of the ceremony, "Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow," illuminated the paramount importance of safeguarding and celebrating culture and heritage, even as the world moves forward and embraces the challenges of the future.
Prince Bader bin Farhan, Saudi Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, expressed his pride in Saudi Arabia's role as the host. He remarked: "Saudi Arabia takes great pride in hosting the extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee. Heritage is at the very core of Saudi Arabia's identity and serves as a unifying force both nationally and globally."
"The Kingdom's active participation in this significant international dialogue reflects our unwavering commitment to preserving culture and heritage for generations to come. In partnership with UNESCO and other stakeholders, we eagerly anticipate fostering greater global cooperation and collective capacity-building in the safeguarding of global cultural heritage, in pursuit of our shared vision for global sustainable development."
Saudi Arabia is celebrated for its rich heritage and diverse culture. Currently, the Kingdom boasts six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Hegra Archaeological Site (al-Hijr), At-Turaif District in ad-Dir'iyah, Historic Jeddah, Rock Art in the Hail Region, Al-Ahsa Oasis, and Hima Cultural Area. Furthermore, another site in Saudi Arabia is currently under consideration for inscription at this year's Committee session.
This momentous UNESCO World Heritage Committee session, hosted by Saudi Arabia, stands as a testament to the Kingdom's commitment to the global preservation of culture and heritage. It represents a unique opportunity for international cooperation in safeguarding our shared human heritage.
